Mi Familia Vota, one of the largest organizations promoting electoral participation among Hispanics in the United States, has partnered with the Drum Major Institute, led by Martin Luther King III, to empower and unite Latinos and African Americans in the run-up to the November presidential elections.

The two organizations said in a statement on Thursday that the alliance is focused on strengthening the collective power of the two communities and their participation in the 2024 elections.

“When we are united we have power”

“My father (Martin Luther King Jr.) often spoke about the power of unity. When we are united in our goals – justice, economic equity, equality and voting rights – we have the power to transform not only our nation but the world,” Martin Luther King III said in the statement.

For his part, Héctor Sánchez Barba, director of Mi Familia Vota, explained that the association aims to ensure the political power of the two communities, which together account for 35% of the country’s population.

The Hispanic leader said that this power should be used to promote the political priorities of those communities and demand fair representation in the most important leadership spaces.

“Black and Latino communities vote”

“There is a lot at stake, from immigration reform to inclusive democracy. This is also a call to action for Black and Latino communities to vote in historic numbers this November,” Sanchez emphasized.

The announcement was made in Chicago, where leaders are attending the Democratic Party Convention.

The Latino and African-American vote could tip the balance in the November presidential elections, especially in key states such as Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania, among others.
