Catcher Danny Jansen will be part of a historic event in Major League Baseball on Monday when the Boston Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
The catcher will be the first MLB player to play in the same game for two different teams.
The player began the 2024 Major League campaign with the Toronto organization, but arrived in Boston via trade on July 27. Now everything becomes unreal.
A month earlier, on June 26, the Red Sox and Blue Jays faced each other at the Red Sox’s home, but the game was suspended in the second inning due to rain, which delayed the game for nearly two hours.
Jansen was the Jays’ starting catcher in that game, but now occupies that same position in the Boston organization. The Canadian team will have to replace its former catcher with a pinch hitter when play resumes.
The fact that Jansen will play for the Red Sox in this game is inevitable. Boston sent Reese McGuire, who was the starting catcher in the June 26 game, to the minor leagues after making the trade with the Canadians. In addition, Alex Cora, the Boston manager, said the 29-year-old will do his job as a catcher.
This story is unbelievable. The Blue Jays had to make the substitution immediately after the game resumed because Jansen was in his first at-bat. The then Toronto catcher had Davis Schneider at first base and his first pitch had been a foul ball.
