The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Mexico reported that it has ready the arrest warrant against Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, for the kidnapping of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
“As for Joaquín “N”, the request for an arrest warrant for kidnapping and also for the illegal deprivation of a person’s liberty in national territory to hand him over to the authorities of another country, transferring him outside of Mexico for that purpose (Article 123 of the Federal Penal Code) has already been prepared,” reads a statement from the entity released this Wednesday.
Authorities added that the investigation into the deprivation of liberty of “El Mayo” revealed new elements such as where the plane used to commit the crime came from.
“Additionally, it was reported that the Prosecutor’s Office located the property where the probable crimes of illegal deprivation of liberty, homicides, injuries and acts linked to forced disappearance were carried out, which are linked to the aggression that led to the death of Héctor “N” (Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda),” they detailed.
The FGR specified that the exterior part of said property is protected by the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC).
The Mexican agency thus ruled out the initial version that the murder of Cuén Ojeda, former Secretary of Health of Sinaloa, had occurred at a gas station.
The information provided by the authorities also confirms the kidnapping of “El Mayo” Zambada by Guzmán López in order to hand him over to the US authorities.
Personnel also identified the vehicles that were used to commit the alleged kidnapping.
“The relevant data will be submitted through due process to the federal judicial authorities when they resume their work. Regardless of this, the federal ministerial and police investigations will continue until the corresponding files are duly compiled,” the entity explained.
Guzmán López was arrested in July at a regional airport near the border city of El Paso, Texas, along with “El Mayo” Zambada, founder of the Sinaloa Cartel with El Chapo.
Guzmán López remains detained at the “MCC Chicago” prison.
The accused faces 17 charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and being part of a criminal organization.
In his first appearance before a judge in the federal court of the aforementioned city, Guzmán López, alias “El Güero,” pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In the case of El Mayo, who was one of the most wanted by the DEA, he is awaiting transfer to New York to face trial. At the moment, he remains in a prison in El Paso. He also pleaded not guilty to the seven drug trafficking charges filed against him.
