Terence Crawford was until recently the undisputed welterweight champion. However, he vacated two of his belts to move up to the super welterweight category, as his goal is to conquer other weights, including 168 pounds, of which Canelo Álvarez is the lord and master.
In fact, Crawford already had his first victory at 154 pounds against Uzbek Israil Madrimov in 12 rounds by unanimous decision. However, for Canelo Alvarez, the experienced American boxer does not perform in the same way outside of welterweight.
According to Canelo, Crawford’s performance against Madrimov wasn’t exactly legendary and the Mexican believes the fight could have easily gone the other way. He doubts the champion’s abilities outside of 147 pounds.
Alvarez argues that Madrimov managed to break Crawford’s guard by coming in with cleaner, harder punches. For Canelo, this shows that Crawford is not the same beast at this weight class, and that moving up to 168 would be an even bigger effort.
Canelo gave this explanation in an interview for the YouTube channel Pound 4 Pound. Well, he was asked about the possibility of facing Crawford next year, as many rumors claim that this fight could happen.
The Guadalajara native made it clear that he is open to negotiations after his title defense on September 14 against Edgar Berlanga. That is, Sheikh Turki Alalshikh would have to make him an offer he can’t refuse.
But despite the large purse that could be offered to Canelo for this fight, the Mexican believes that it will not be an attractive fight for the public. He thinks that Crawford “is simply too small, too old and weak” to have a chance against him at 168 pounds.
