On May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the absolute super middleweight champion, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, faced the Mexican Jaime Munguía. In a fight in which the experienced boxer took the victory in 12 rounds by unanimous decision.

In addition, Canelo took away Munguía’s unbeaten record of 43-0, 34 of them by knockout, to date. Also, at 27 years old, he had the opportunity to get into the ring with one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of today.

Recently in a chat with ESPN Munguía analyzed his fight against Canelo. He took the opportunity to highlight what he learned from that fight in Las Vegas and how getting into the ring with Álvarez made him grow as a boxer.

“I learned a lot of things. Being on the big stages, in the big leagues, makes you learn a lot. You learn in preparation, you get to know yourself much better,” explained the boxer from Tijuana.

“It was a good fight, entertaining for everyone and nobody likes to lose, but we must always try to learn from victories, although this time we had to learn from defeat, but we are going to keep moving forward and there is no reason to be sad, on the contrary, we must try to keep growing,” said the 27-year-old boxer.

On the other hand, Munguía responded to questions about whether he was prepared to face a boxer as experienced and successful as Canelo Álvarez. But the Mexican said that he “doesn’t regret anything” and that even though it wasn’t the right time, he had to do it.

“I think I was doing well, I was having a very good fight and Canelo knew how to adjust, he is experienced. You never know when the right time is and, even if it is not the right time, you have to do things to grow and that helps me grow,” the boxer concluded.

For now, Munguía is preparing in California for his next fight on September 20 against Erik Bazinyan at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
