More and more Mexican players are making a name for themselves in Europe. Last Saturday, Mexican goalkeeper Alex Padilla went viral. With both Athletic Bilbao goalkeepers injured, the Aztec has come out on top and in the 2-1 defeat against FC Barcelona, he made a name for himself with a great save.
In the second match of LaLiga at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic and despite the defeat, Padilla had a great match with three decisive saves that were ultimately overshadowed by the two goals.
However, he went viral for an epic save from point-blank range inside the six-yard box. With the match tied at one goal each, in the 63rd minute the Brazilian Raphinha broke through on the left flank and sent in a cross that found the Polish striker.
Robert Lewandowski did not hesitate to finish with a powerful right-footed shot at the far post. The shot was intended to be crossed, but went almost in the middle of the goal. Padilla ran from one post to the other and opened his whole body to try to occupy as much space as possible.
The veteran striker’s powerful shot crashed into the Mexican’s body, who finally stole a clear goal from the Pole. The fact has not gone unnoticed on social media and Alex has ended up going viral.
The save came at a crucial moment as the game was still tied at one goal. However, 12 minutes later, Lewandowski could have found the net in a similar move. He had also hit the posts twice before.
This is the second match for the goalkeeper with Mexican roots. Álex Padilla Pérez was born in Spain in 2003, but has dual nationality. He is 1.90m tall. He began his career at CD Zarautz, the team from his hometown.
He later moved to Athletic Bilbao’s youth team. There he was loaned to CD Basconia. In the 2022-2023 season, he became a starter at Bilbao Athletic, the reserve team. However, due to the injury of the two starting goalkeepers, Padilla had to come through.
He made his professional debut this year, on August 15th in a 1-1 draw against Getafe. As for national teams, Alex is Mexican, but was born in Spain.
For this reason, he has represented the ‘Red Fury’ in its lower categories. With Spain U-19 he played six matches. However, now he represents El Tri. With Mexico U-23 he has recently played and has been called up for friendly matches.
