Venezuela’s largest opposition bloc, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), called on Saturday for a protest next Wednesday against the Supreme Court’s ruling that validates the controversial “victory” of Nicolás Maduro in the July 28 elections, in which the anti-Chavez coalition claims that its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, won.

Through social media, the opposition alliance indicated that the demonstration will be on August 28 – when “one month has passed” since the “glorious victory” that, it insists, its candidate obtained – on Francisco de Miranda Avenue, one of the main avenues in Caracas, starting at 11:00 in the morning.

“We Venezuelans are once again in the streets. This August 28, with our families, with our children, with our grandchildren and with our deeds in hand, we confirm that deeds kill sentences,” said the PUD, a message that was also published by several opponents, including former deputy María Corina Machado, González Urrutia’s main supporter.

Act kills sentence!

That is why, one month after our glorious victory, in which Edmundo González was elected President, we Venezuelans find ourselves once again in the streets.

In this regard, the platform invited Venezuelans to print the “record” corresponding to their voting center from a website where it claims to have published “83.5%” of these papers obtained, according to the PUD, through people who were witnesses and members of the table during the electoral day, documents that Chavismo points out as “false.”

This website is also under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which is in the hands of the Chavistas, due to the “alleged commission of crimes of usurpation of functions” and “conspiracy”, among others, for which González Urrutia was summoned to appear next Monday.

The opposition leader rejected the Supreme Court’s ruling on Thursday, saying that “sovereignty resides, untransferably, in the people,” citing the Constitution, and therefore, he added, “they will not usurp the truth.”

The TSJ assumed the “validation” of the results at the request of Maduro, who filed an appeal for protection that was never known and for which the 10 former candidates were summoned, although González Urrutia declined to attend, considering that verification is not the responsibility of the legal institution, but of the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The decision of the Supreme Court – presided over by Chavista Caryslia Rodríguez, who led the “validation” process – was expected by González Urrutia and other opponents, who consider that the court is “biased”, contrary to what Maduro claims, who defends his impartiality.
