Vallejo police said they discovered a 10-foot python inside a car while raiding an illegal show that was endangering other drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The snake was returned to its owner, they said.

The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) received multiple calls from the public complaining about a show taking place at the intersection of Mare Island Way and Harbor Way. They reported that around 500 vehicles were participating, blocking traffic in the area and shining lasers into the eyes of other drivers.

Multiple police and sheriff’s agencies converged on the scene for a raid. “Our patrol officers responded to the listed scene to disrupt the sideshow,” VPD said.

They point lasers at the police

When officers arrived on scene, they were advised by the CHP Air Operations Unit that one of the occupants, inside a 2007 Cadillac CT6, was shining a laser inside its hood while performing donuts in the roadway.

The occupants of the Cadillac pointed the laser at the officers’ eyes. “Our officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the Cadillac, but the driver refused to stop and initiated a pursuit that ended in Hercules, CA,” they shared in a statement.

They left the snake in the vehicle

The driver and passengers got out of the vehicle to try to escape. When officers approached the car to check it, they saw that a 10-foot-long (3-meter) python had been left on the seats, which was rescued by one of the officers.

“The CHP Air Operations Unit, Hercules Police Department and the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office canine unit assisted in apprehending the four suspects at the scene,” they added.

Arrested and charged with several counts

The snake was returned to its owner, the police statement said, and was apparently doing well, although the owner has been charged.

The driver of the Cadillac CT6 was arrested on multiple charges, including felony evading. All three occupants were issued misdemeanor citations and released from the scene.

The city of Vallejo is located about 30 miles (5 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, California.
