A 24-year-old man was struck in the head with a hammer while talking to his girlfriend on a sidewalk in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
A man carrying the tool approached the victim and struck him in the forehead at 1445 Nelson Avenue in the Highbridge neighborhood around 12:45 p.m., police said.
The victim was treated on site by paramedics minutes after the attack.
The young man had a gauze bandage wrapped from the top of his head to the bottom of his chin as blood dripped from the back of his head.
At one point, the victim, who was not wearing a shirt, lay down on a piece of clothing to receive help from rescuers.
He was taken to San Bernabé Hospital in stable condition.
The man who struck the man in the head with a hammer escaped on his own after the attack and has not yet been arrested, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said.
No further information has yet been available regarding the hammer attack, including what the motive for it may have been.
