The situation with Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo, who collapsed on August 22 during the Copa Libertadores round of 16 between Sao Paulo and his team Nacional de Montevideo, remains critical and for this reason they confirmed the suspension of local football while the defender does not recover.

According to sources from the Executive Board of the First Division of the Uruguayan Football Association, the second and third dates of the Uruguayan Clausura Tournament will be rescheduled, including the match that was to be played this Monday between Izquierdo’s team and Liverpool, as well as the entire matchday from last weekend.

As for Izquierdo’s health, he underwent new tests on Sunday which showed “a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure.”

This was reported by the Albert Einstein Israeli Hospital in a statement that was released by the Uruguayan team on its social networks.

“Patient Juan Manuel Izquierdo, admitted to hospital on August 22, 2024, at 8:55 p.m., underwent new tests this Sunday, August 25. The evaluation showed a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure. Juan remains in neurological intensive care, dependent on mechanical ventilation,” the report states.

Izquierdo fainted on Thursday in the 84th minute of the match between Nacional and São Paulo in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

The footballer, who started the match on the bench and came on to play the second half in place of Sebastián Coates, fell to the ground and had to be taken out of the stadium in an ambulance.

Following this incident, the Uruguayan club announced in a statement that the 27-year-old defender suffered a cardiac arrhythmia and was admitted to the intensive care center.
