After trying to fight Canelo Alvarez for the past two years, David Benavidez decided to move on in his career and go for other belts, which is why the boxer moved up to the light heavyweight category.
At this weight, the “Red Flag”, as he is often nicknamed, recently had his first fight against Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who won by unanimous decision in 12 rounds to win the interim WBC light heavyweight title.
However, Benavídez seems to want to go for more in this new division and intends to step into the ring against Dmitry Bivol, one of the best pound for pound fighters today and holder of the World Boxing Association belt.
Bivol is scheduled to fight on October 12 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia against Russian Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed 175-pound title. However, it is not ruled out that the next fight will be against Benavídez.
In light of the possibility of this fight, the always controversial Canelo Alvarez gave his opinion on the matter, stating that Benavídez has no chance against Bivol in a hypothetical fight next year.
“If Benavídez goes out to fight like we saw in the last fight, he will have no chance against Bivol. He would beat him,” Canelo said in an interview for Boxing Scene.
The Mexican knows Dmitry Bivol very well. In his long career, he is one of only two boxers who has been able to win a fight against him. The first was Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and then it was the Russian in May 2022.
For now, Bivol is concentrating on his fight in Saudi Arabia on October 12. Meanwhile, Benavídez still has no confirmed date for 2024, as he is coming off a fight against Gvozdyk last June.
