A fierce confrontation took place this Thursday, August 29 at noon (local time) in the city of Culiacán, where elements of the Mexican Army exchanged fire supposedly with members of the Pacific Cartel, since unofficially it was said that they had captured the capo Arhivaldo Guzmán Salazar, leader of Los Chapitos, which was denied by the Ministry of National Defense.
The streets of Culiacán were blocked by buses that were set on fire and vehicles that were overturned, businesses were closed, and people sought refuge from the violence that had broken out.
The governor calls for calm
According to some Mexican media outlets, this was due to elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) entering the town of Paredones and being met with attacks by armed civilians, who are allegedly members of organized crime.
The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, sent a message through his X account to ask the population to remain calm after the violent accidents that occurred throughout the afternoon of this Thursday.
“I call on the people of Culiacán to remain calm. The situation, which has been made public, is being addressed and is focused outside the city. In any case, it is recommended to pay attention to official information and avoid information that is issued unofficially with the sole purpose of causing alarm,” he said.
“This led to civilians setting fire to two vehicles on Mexico Highway 15, near Limón de los Ramos, in order to obstruct the actions of the authorities, and these are the images that have been circulating on social media,” the governor continued.
The army entered the town where they captured Ovidio
The town of Paredones, located in the Jesús María area, was the place where Ovidio Guzmán López, son of the Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” Guzmán, was captured in January 2023.
The mayor of Culiacán, Juan de Dios Gámez Mendívil, also said through his networks, “derived from actions of the security forces of the Federal Government, in the municipality of Jesús María, north of the municipality of Culiacán, incidents of insecurity have been recorded focused on that area, on Mexico Highway 15.”
$10 million for Archivaldo Guzman
Given the situation of violence, some Mexican newspapers and media unofficially reported that the authorities had captured Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, for whom the DEA is offering $10,000,000 dollars.
It was also reported that Jorge Humberto Figueroa, alias “El 27” or “El Perris”, head of security for Los Chapitos, had allegedly been arrested, which has not been confirmed by the corresponding authorities to date.
