US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has achieved a significant lead in voting intention among the Latino community, beating former President Donald Trump by 16 percentage points, according to a Suffolk University poll.

The poll, conducted Aug. 25-28, found Harris leading the former Republican president 53% to 37% among Latino voters.

The shift in Latino voter preference is notable, especially considering that last June, Trump was leading President Joe Biden by 2 points among this demographic.

Harris’ nomination, following Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, appears to have prompted a significant shift in the preferences of Latino voters, who have shifted 18 points toward the Democratic candidate.

In the national total with all voters, Harris has 47.6%, while Trump has 43.3%. This poll was conducted in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with a sample of 1,000 registered voters and a margin of error of +/- 3.1 points.

David Paleologos, director of the Center for Political Research at Suffolk University, noted that Harris has managed to capture support not only from the Latino community, but also from other key groups. “Young people, people of color, and low-income households have shifted dramatically toward the vice president,” Paleologos said in a statement.

Young people and African Americans

The impact of Harris’ nomination is not limited to the Latino community. Among young voters aged 18 to 34, the vice president has secured a 13-point lead over Trump, a notable change from the 11-point advantage the Republican held in June.

This variation reflects a total swing of 24 points in this group of young voters.

Harris’ support has also increased among African Americans, a group that has historically supported the Democratic Party. The vice president has gained 17 points in this segment, consolidating her position as the preferred candidate for this community.

As for low-income voters, Harris has built up a considerable lead. While in June Trump led this group by 3 points, the recent poll shows Harris now has a 23-point lead.

Despite these favorable trends for Harris, the poll reveals that 4.8% of voters remain undecided, suggesting that the race is still far from over. With the November 5 election approaching, these undecided votes could be decisive in the final result.
