A truly unusual event took place on Thursday on the track at the historic Monza Formula 1 circuit.
After the Safety Car went off track while reconnoitering the track and ended up embedded against the retaining walls.
It happened as safety car driver Bernd Maylander was carrying out tests on the Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition, checking the systems and doing quick laps to certify that the vehicle was fit to be part of the competition whenever it is required throughout the weekend.
The car slid off the asphalt and after a turn ended up against the barriers that are covered to lessen the impact. Fortunately, there were no injuries, as Maylander and his companion were able to get out without help, although the medical car went to the scene to pick them up and return them to the pits.
In a statement released after the incident, the FIA clarified that the accident will not impact the competition to be held in Italy, which will feature the debut of Argentine driver Franco Colapinto aboard the Williams FW46 as a replacement for American Logan Sargeant: “Today at Monza there was an on-track incident involving the FIA Safety Car. Aston Martin is investigating the cause but can confirm that both the driver and passenger are fine. There is another Safety Car on track and it will not affect this weekend’s event.”
Aston Martin introduced the Vantage F11 Safety Car version this year, which features a hand-built 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and, according to the company, is 30% more powerful than the model used until the previous season. It should be remembered that since 2021, Aston Martin and Mercedes have shared the responsibilities of the safety car, with the German brand’s 720 hp AMG GT Black Series.
