San Francisco 49ers NFL rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot on Saturday after an attempted robbery in Union Square, one of California’s most popular shopping areas.
Pearsall, 23, was shot in the chest after an unknown individual tried to rob him of his belongings, according to information released by San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
“This afternoon there was an attempted robbery in Union Square involving San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, and he was shot. SFPD arrived on scene immediately and the shooter was arrested. My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time,” Breed said.
According to NBC Bay Area, the boy, who was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, is in stable condition after the San Francisco Police Department took control of the situation and caught the assailant.
The incident occurred while the player was on his way to an autograph signing. An assailant threatened him and tried to rob him of his Rolex. There was a struggle over the weapon which was detonated and wounded the recipient in the chest.
Pearsall, who starred in college football with the Florida Gators, was selected by the Gators in the 31st spot in the first round of this year’s draft to strengthen the aerial attack.
In 2023, with the Gators, he had 65 receptions for 965 yards and four touchdowns. He finished his college career with 159 receptions for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns.
After working in six of the 49ers’ 19 offseason practices, the rookie missed all three preseason games with shoulder and hamstring injuries.
Despite these injuries, the Phoenix, Arizona-born kid was expected to make his debut with the Gambusinos in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season on September 9 in the duel against the New York Jets.
