Puerto Rican boxer Edgar Berlanga decided to once again heat up the match he will star in on September 14 against the Mexican and multiple super middleweight champion, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, after criticizing his decision to carry out this card on the same day in which the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event will be held in the city.
These statements were made by Berlanga during an interview for the program Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru and Henr, where he considered that the enormous ego of the Aztec fighter for not wanting to change the date of their fight despite it taking place on the same day in which a card organized by the largest mixed martial arts company on the planet will take place; he maintained that this fact will only affect both fights because contact sports fans will have to split up to be able to see these fights.
“I’m not going to lie, man, I have a lot of respect for the UFC. If I were in Canelo’s shoes, I would have said: ‘Hey, let’s move the date… we’re going to leave that date to the UFC. They’re making history that day,’” Berlanga emphasized in his statements.
“Canelo is a guy with too much pride. You see it in the way he faces difficult situations, like with Turki Al-Alshikh. He feels like the money man… He is that guy,” added the Puerto Rican fighter who hopes to get Canelo Álvarez’s championship belts because that night he will put on display the three titles he holds from the World Boxing Council (WBC), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the World Boxing Association (WBA).
It is important to highlight that the UFC 306 card will take place at The Sphere in Las Vegas, a site that will host a sporting event linked to contact sports for the first time; this fact had already occurred in 2023, when the UFC and Canelo Álvarez had a problem with the dates and the venue in which they would fight.
