South African tycoon Elon Musk, owner of X, said the suspension of the platform in Brazil was ordered by an “unelected pseudo-judge” who is “destroying freedom of expression, a pillar of democracy, for political purposes.”
On his personal X account, Musk lashed out in this way in his first reaction to the “immediate” suspension of X ordered by Judge Alexandre De Moraes, of the Supreme Court of Brazil.
On August 29, the billionaire had called De Moraes “an evil dictator disguised as a judge.”
In his messages, he continued to lash out at “the repressive regime in Brazil” that “is so afraid of letting the people know the truth that it will break anyone who tries.”
In another post, Musk noted that “the attacks on free speech this year are unprecedented in the 20th century,” echoing another message that cited measures against the social network in Brazil, Canada and France.
Judge De Moraes’ ruling comes as part of an investigation into the dissemination of false news in which Musk is suspected of committing crimes of obstruction of justice, criminal organization and incitement to crime.
The judge said he took this measure due to “the failure to comply with court orders” by the X platform and the “attempt to not submit to the Brazilian legal system” with the intention of “establishing an environment of total impunity and lawlessness.”
In this vein, he ordered the “immediate” suspension until “all court orders are complied with” and the million-dollar fines imposed on X are paid.
According to De Moraes, the social network is also being “exploited” by “extremist groups” through the “massive dissemination of Nazi, fascist, anti-democratic and hate speech” in the run-up to the municipal elections, which will be held in October.
