Inter Milan secured a crushing 4-0 victory over Atalanta on Friday in a new Serie A match at the San Siro stadium and although the result was striking for its forcefulness, it was Nicolo Barella’s goal that stole the show.
Not even the brace scored by Inter striker Marcus Thuram overshadowed Barella’s goal with a volley from outside the area which, despite the fact that the 2024-2025 European football season is just beginning, will surely become one of the best goals of the campaign.
Inter went ahead in the third minute of play, thanks to an own goal by centre-back Berat Djimsiti, but just seven minutes later Barella’s gem came thanks to the persistence of the Nerazzurri.
A corner from the left for Inter Milan was sent to the penalty spot and the visiting defence tried to clear it twice. The first was unsuccessful and the second successful but it was towards the middle of the area and unfortunately for Atalanta Barella was in the rebounding area ready to hit the ball squarely.
And so he did, but with a gem of a result. Barella hit the ball left-footed from the half-moon and his shot went straight into the top corner of Italian goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi’s goal, who ended up diving alone “for the photo.”
The goal was a relief for Barella who ran to celebrate with his fans to shake off an irregular last season that had him far from his best level.
