Donald Trump in conflict over the assault on the Capitol
Donald Trump’s comment came amid a debate over presidential powers, especially after the US Supreme Court granted him partial immunity in the case of the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The court ruled that a former president has “absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his constitutional authority,” but stressed that this immunity does not extend to unofficial acts.
Special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is in charge of investigating the Capitol assault, revised the charges against Trump in a new indictment filed this week.
It upheld the original four charges but amended some allegations related to Trump’s efforts to implicate the Justice Department in his claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Republican candidate could not face charges for his interactions with the Justice Department, as these actions were considered part of his presidential duties.
In his speech, Donald Trump reiterated his belief that he had won the 2020 election, saying that he had obtained “the most votes of any sitting president in history,” although he acknowledged that his rival won “by a hair.”
