Honolulu police say four people were killed and two others wounded in a shooting at a home following a dispute between neighbors. Authorities said the gunman was fatally shot by a resident who was arrested on a second-degree murder charge.
Police described a 58-year-old man using a front-end loader to ram cars into a home where a family gathering was taking place over the weekend.
They said the gunman then opened fire without justification on guests gathered in the parking lot. Three women were killed at the home in Waianae, a community about 30 miles west of downtown Honolulu, Honolulu police Detective Lt. Deena Thoemmes told The Associated Press.
The owner of the house killed the suspect
Lt. Thoemmes said a 42-year-old man, who saw the problem the gunman was causing and who also “lived in the house, shot and killed the suspect,” she said at the news conference.
The women killed in the shooting were not identified by authorities, who said only that they were 34, 36 and 29 years old. A 31-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were taken to the hospital in critical condition, the statement said.
Had gallons of an unknown fuel
The suspect was also not identified by the lieutenant during the briefing, but was said to have four 55-gallon drums containing an unknown fuel in the front-end loader, Thoemmes said. Witnesses reported that he fired at them, but police have not yet confirmed that, AP added.
The shooting is just one of several that have occurred in the area in recent weeks, prompting police to pledge to work to combat gun violence, Police Chief Joe Logan said at the news conference.
He added that the shooting that occurred on Saturday was not related to the previous ones. He suggested that it would be difficult for police to prevent such a targeted act stemming from a dispute unless someone made contact beforehand.
