Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé spoke on Sunday about what it meant to have scored his first brace in LaLiga, ending a three-match drought without scoring.
In an interview with Real Madrid TV, Mbappé spoke of having experienced a great moment with his double and especially what it was like to have done it in a great stadium, the best in the world in his words, like the Santiago Bernabéu.
“A great moment. I was hoping to score in this legendary stadium, the best in the world, but the most important thing is the victory. After the game in Las Palmas we knew we had to win. It was a difficult game, as always against teams here, but we are Real Madrid and we finally won,” he said about the match.
Mbappé was grateful for the confidence he has felt in the games without scoring. “Since I arrived I have said it: I am very happy, people give me a lot of affection even when I was not scoring. Three games is not enough for many people, but for me it is a lot and the people at the club, the players and the fans have always been with me. My goal was to have confidence and score goals for the club with this badge,” he acknowledged.
With the bad streak over, Mbappé is now only thinking about starting a good scoring streak that will boost his team. “Since the first day of my presentation it has been a dream to be here, I hope to score more and get more applause.”
In addition, after speaking on club television, Mbappé spoke in the mixed zone for the rest of the journalists.
“It was a great moment for me. The most important thing was to win because after the game against Las Palmas it was difficult. At home we always have to win. It was a great night for me because I wanted to score at the Bernabéu, but it wasn’t a pressure for me because I knew this was going to happen,” he said.
“I came here naturally. I wanted to help the team, to spend some quality time with Vinícius and the others. We have an incredible group here. They are great players and great people. And things are going to improve tactically and if we all connect we will have a great season,” he said.
He also talked about his position on the field, playing more as a ‘9’ and leaving the left wing to Vinícius.
“I am a player who can play in all three positions, I did it in Paris, Monaco, the national team… It is not a problem for me, what I have to do is adapt to my teammates. My position is a debate for you or people from outside, it is not something I have in mind. Things will improve,” he said.
He also said that he was “not” surprised by the pressure at Real Madrid and the criticism after two draws in three games, since at Paris Saint-Germain “it was the same”.
“This is part of life at a great club and it doesn’t affect me or my teammates either,” he said.
Finally, he asked for patience so that he and the team can adapt after his arrival.
“I know that when a player like me comes to a team, many things change. I know that, I’m not crazy. And from the first game you can see that we are a little bit better. I feel good in the team and as a player I can do better than today and in other games,” he concluded.
