A shooting that occurred early Monday morning aboard a Chicago subway car left four people dead, local authorities reported.
The incident occurred around 5:30 am (local time) on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train heading toward Forest Park, an area west of the city.
The victims, all passengers on the moving train, were hit by bullets in what police have described as an “isolated incident.”
Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth person later died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.
The suspected shooter fled the scene and boarded another train. However, the rapid intervention of Chicago police, supported by surveillance camera footage, allowed him to be located and arrested shortly after the attack.
Authorities have not yet revealed the identity of the suspect or possible motives behind the shooting.
“It should never have happened”
In response to the incident, the CTA issued a statement condemning the violent act. “Although this was an isolated incident, this atrocious and outrageous act of violence should never have occurred, and certainly not on a public transport train,” the organization said.
They added that they will continue to work with local police as part of this ongoing investigation.
“We commend both the Forest Park Police Department for their thorough and collaborative efforts in providing information to partner agencies; as well as the Chicago Police Department, whose quick actions led to the arrest of a suspect in this matter,” they concluded.
This shooting adds to the alarming statistics of gun violence in the United States. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, 11,463 people have died from gunshots in the country so far this year, and 22,027 have been injured.
