The last pickup trucks in a motorcade carrying Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz crashed on the highway as they headed from the airport to a campaign stop in Milwaukee. Reports confirm Walz was unharmed.
The vehicles involved in the collision were carrying part of the Minnesota governor’s campaign team, as well as members of the press. Some media outlets reported that one person apparently suffered a broken arm, but was treated by medical services.
Tim Walz was riding in one of the first pickup trucks in the caravan and was unharmed in the accident. Other people suffered bumps and bruises that are not life-threatening.
Biden and Harris spoke with Walz
“Some of you may have heard that some of my staff and press representatives who were traveling with us were involved in a traffic accident on their way here today,” Walz said during the campaign event. “We have spoken with the staff. I am relieved to say that, although with some minor injuries, everyone is going to be OK.”
President Joe Biden spoke with Walz from Air Force One shortly after the crash. The president was traveling to a campaign event in Pittsburgh with Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Democratic presidential candidate was campaigning in Detroit before heading to the event alongside Biden. Her campaign said Harris spoke to her running mate by phone after the crash, AP reported.
They did not specify the cause of the accident.
Images posted on social media showed the passenger vans with their front and rear ends smashed together after the collision, which happened on Interstate 794.
It was not clear what caused the crash. They said Walz and his entourage stopped at a hospital for a few hours to check on the staff members involved. The van carrying the journalists remained stopped on the side of the road for several minutes.
Walz was at the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday. His schedule dictated that he would speak with union officials in Milwaukee on Labor Day afternoon.
