After former US President Donald Trump sarcastically mentioned that he might move to Venezuela if he lost the next election, Nicolás Maduro reacted and suggested that the tycoon look for a residence in the exclusive Las Mercedes neighborhood in Caracas.
In a recent televised statement, Maduro stressed that the Republican, who will face Democrat Kamala Harris in the November elections, recognizes that Venezuela is even a safer country than the United States. The socialist leader, however, did not clarify the background.
“Even Donald Trump recognizes that Venezuela is the safest country on the continent. He even said that if he loses, he will come to Caracas. There are beautiful places here. For example, there is a place called Chula Vista in Las Mercedes, there are beautiful houses, buildings and apartments. You can come, Donald Trump, to enjoy the peace and happiness that Venezuela is experiencing,” he said.
Why did Donald Trump say he would go to Venezuela?
Trump’s main focus in his remarks is the entry of undocumented migrants into the United States, many of them from Venezuela. He has claimed that the “open border policy” of Joe Biden’s government has increased crime in his country.
“(Venezuela was) really a dangerous place, but not anymore because crime in Venezuela is down 72%. In fact, if (the Democrats) ever win this election, I hate to say it, we would hold our next Republican convention in Venezuela because it will be a safe place,” the Republican said in mid-July.
Las Mercedes: Caracas’ “economic bubble”
Las Mercedes is one of the most exclusive and expensive neighborhoods in Caracas. Located in the Baruta municipality, this sector has historically been a symbol of economic power in Venezuela.
In the last decade, Las Mercedes has established itself as an “economic bubble”, where the crisis affecting the rest of the country did not seem to have the same impact. In the midst of this situation, the urbanization experienced a boom in luxury construction, including corporate and residential towers.
This neighborhood is also known for its nightlife, with a wide range of high-end and opulent restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
It stands out not only for its commercial and entertainment offerings, but also for its residential areas. Sectors such as Chula Vista, mentioned by Maduro, are known for their luxurious mansions and apartments that offer privileged views of the city.
The development also has a large amount of private security, making it one of the safest areas in Caracas, according to its residents. Property prices in this area are considerably higher than in other parts of the capital.
