New York – Authorities have not specified what caused the accident involving the motorcade of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday.
Reporters who were with the procession said they were “thrown violently forward,” causing the vehicle they were in to crash into another one in front of them.
Walz escaped the crash unhurt. However, the BBC report said one person suffered a broken arm and needed medical treatment. It is not clear who the patient is. The Associated Press reported that some of the passengers suffered minor injuries.
Some journalists had scratches and bruises, and one had a nosebleed, the news agency said.
The emergency on Interstate 794 occurred around 1 p.m. The vehicles involved were at the back of the caravan and were carrying members of the media who were covering the event.
After the incident, the affected vehicles stopped at a corner of the road, while the candidate continued on his planned route.
Shortly after the incident, Walz referred to it during his Labor Fest campaign event.
“Some members of my team and the press who were travelling with us were involved in a traffic accident on the way here today. We have spoken to the team. I am relieved to say that, with some minor injuries, everyone will be fine,” he told the crowd.
The Minnesota mayor thanked Secret Service agents and local first responders for their quick response to help.
Both his running mate, vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden reached out to Walz by phone to check in. Both leaders were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Detroit, Michigan, at campaign events.
Walz and other members of his team arrived at the hospital hours after the accident to check on the status of those affected.
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance expressed solidarity with his Republican opponent, and in a message on social media X, he expressed that he hoped everything was okay.
This is not the first time that an accident has been reported in the middle of a Democratic caravan.
Last week, a Georgia police officer was injured in a single-vehicle crash in the middle of an event for the vice president.
The Savannah Police Department confirmed that one of its motorcycle officers was involved in a crash Wednesday night on I-516.
David Bates was injured in a single-vehicle crash while supporting a car parade as part of a Harris campaign event.
Bates lost control of his motorcycle. Although he was seriously injured, he is in a stable condition while continuing to receive treatment.
