Thousands of Americans could be missing out on up to $11,676 a year through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
This federally funded benefit is not only available to people with disabilities, but also to adults age 65 or older and people who are blind.
To qualify, applicants must have low income and few financial resources.
The monthly SSI payment can be as high as $973 for eligible individuals. This amounts to $11,676 per year.
However, for eligible married couples, this amount can increase to $1,415 per month, which is equivalent to $16,980 per year.
These payments are generally made on the first day of each month, although if it coincides with a weekend or holiday, payment is made in advance to the previous business day.
To be eligible in 2024, applicants must meet several requirements, including being low-income, having few resources, and meeting at least one of the following conditions: having a disability, being blind, or being 65 years of age or older.
Additionally, they must be U.S. citizens or nationals, and reside in one of the 50 states, DC, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
It is important not to be absent from the country, nor to be imprisoned or confined in a hospital at the expense of the government.
