Chicago Cubs star Shota Imanaga, along with Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge, were in charge of prescribing nine zeros to the Pittsburgh Pirates offense on Wednesday and also not allowing hits during the 12-0 victory at the legendary Wrigley Field.
Imanaga, one of the best arms in the National League with a 12-3 record, pitched for seven innings and also struck out seven opponents during his performance, which ended with two walks that ended the possibility of seeing another perfect game in the Major Leagues.
Despite his great work from the mound, the 95 pitches (66 strikes) in the seventh inning eliminated his chance of getting the complete game and he had to give way to Pearson, who completed the three outs without problems.
In the ninth inning, Hodge sealed the no-hitter when he dominated infielder Oneil Cruz with a breaking pitch to seal the Cubs’ 18th no-hitter in history.
Additionally, the combined effort by Imanaga, Pearson and Hodge was the first combined no-hitter for the Cubs since Zach Davies, Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin and Craig Kimbel silenced the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 24, 2021, at Dodger Stadium.
The offense also exploded with both the 12 runs and the 17 hits they collectively connected on, marking the third time since 1964 that a no-hitter ended with 17 or more hits.
