The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) held a new briefing to share information related to the four victims of the Apalachee High School shooting in Winder, who were previously identified as two students and two teachers. Here’s what’s known about each of them.

The four victims who lost their lives during the shooting on Wednesday, September 4, were identified by authorities as:

  • Richard Aspinwall, 39, teacher and coach. He was affectionately known as Ricky. He was a math teacher and assistant coach for the Apalachee Wildcats football team. Previously, he was at Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville, who sent their condolences upon hearing of the tragedy.
  • Christina Irimie, 53, teacher. She taught maths and was described by students as a patient and caring teacher.
  • Mason Schermerhorn, 14, student. He was a junior in high school. He was described as a happy teen who enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, telling jokes, playing video games and visiting Walt Disney World. He had recently started attending school.
  • Christian Angulo, 14, student. He was in his first year of high school. His older sister opened a GoFundMe account where she describes him as “A very good boy, very sweet and very loving. He was loved by many.” “His loss was so sudden and unexpected. We are truly heartbroken,” wrote Lisette Angulo.

The shooting that occurred at 10:23 a.m. also left nine other people hospitalized. Eight of the injured were students and one was a teacher.

Another teacher was shot in the foot and hip

One of the injured was David Phenix, according to a social media post by his daughter. She wrote that her father was shot in the foot and hip. He emerged from surgery and is in stable condition.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said after the shooting that his “heart aches for our community.”

“My heart aches for these kids. My heart aches for our community,” Smith said. “But I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. I want that to be very clear and known. Love will prevail over what happened today.”

Shooter to be tried as an adult

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke out in response to the tragedy. “I want to ask all Georgians and all Americans to continue to keep these families, these educators and these students in your thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect in the shooting is a student at Apalachee High School in Winder, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, who is in police custody. After opening fire, the student immediately surrendered and was taken into custody.

Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, confirmed that Gray “will be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult.”
