A total of 11 people have been arrested in connection with the nationwide blackout that occurred on August 30, Venezuelan Minister of the Interior and Justice Diosdado Cabello said.
In his weekly program “Con el Mazo Dando,” Cabello reiterated that the blackout was the result of a “terrorist attack” perpetrated by opposition groups, whom he described as “fascists.”
“There are already detainees, we are transferring them to Caracas,” Cabello said without offering further details about the arrests, adding that “justice will be done” in this regard.
Cabello also stressed that the opposition is aware that by attacking the electrical system, they are causing a “cross-party blow” that affects the water supply and the operation of hospitals.
Opposition blames Maduro regime for blackouts
The opposition, for its part, blames the Maduro regime for the deficiencies in electricity, health and other services. They argue that this is due to the “laziness, corruption and incompetence” of those responsible for these services.
Despite the allegations, Maduro spoke out about the incident, saying that the blackout was caused by an “attack on the heart” of the Guri system, the country’s main power generation facility, located in Bolívar state. He said the attack was due to “fascist currents” that are trying to destabilize the government.
Maduro said the mechanisms used in the attack have been identified, although he did not offer further details because the investigation is ongoing. The president stressed the importance of achieving justice in this case.
