Duncan McQuarrie, the drunk driver who struck and killed a mother and her son late last month, has been charged with multiple counts and is currently in jail. The fatal crash occurred on Highway 85 in San Jose, California.
The California Highway Patrol received a call about a wrong-way driver on Highway 85 around 3:40 p.m. on August 26. The driver was a white Toyota Tacoma heading northbound near Saratoga Avenue.
The crash occurred minutes later on northbound Highway 85, south of Highway 87. The victims were identified as Rebecca Olsen, 47, who was driving the Tesla, and her 14-year-old son, Charles “Charlie” George Olsen, when they were struck by McQuarrie.
Drunk and going the wrong way
The driver who was traveling in the opposite direction was also intoxicated. After the accident he was hospitalized for the injuries he suffered. After being released and the investigation was carried out, he was charged with the deaths of the victims.
Duncan McQuarrie, 39, of Orlando, Florida was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on Thursday, September 5.
He faces two counts of murder, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, among other charges, according to the San Jose division of the California Highway Patrol.
McQuarrie has a lengthy arrest record. Among other troubles with the law, he was cited for driving without a license this year, for possession of cocaine in 2021, and for drunk driving in 2013.
