Striker Luis Suárez is saying goodbye to the Uruguay national team and his teammates have decided that it has to be in style.
To the rhythm of the Uruguayan band No Te Va A Gustar, with their song “A las Nueve” in the background, the Pistolero’s farewell begins. The images show a summary of the conference he gave on Monday at the Centenario Stadium, where he announced his farewell, and the faces of the journalists devastated by the situation.
“I hope it’s a joke, but I really understand it,” is one of the best phrases in the song that describes the moment. One of the greatest idols of the Uruguayan national team will no longer wear his country’s jersey and, although many people from the east are hurt by the decision, they know that the moment has come and that nothing lasts forever.
The Centenario Stadium will be packed for the Last Dance: tears, hugs and applause will prevail on the Montevideo night.
The gunslinger played 142 matches and scored 69 goals. He was the top scorer for his national team, second in terms of goals in the qualifiers with 29 – two less than Messi – and scored in all competitions: the World Cup, Copa América, Confederations Cup, qualifiers and friendlies.
He also played in four World Cups and, except for the last one, scored at least one goal in all of them. Continental champion in 2011 on Argentine soil against Paraguay, the award for best player of the tournament in said competition and fourth place in South Africa 2010 are some of the striker’s other achievements.
La Celeste is second in the qualifiers with 13 points, two behind the team led by Lionel Scaloni. So far, they have four wins, one draw and one loss, in the second round, 2-1 against Ecuador as a visitor.
The next match will see them travel to Venezuela to face the Vinotinto four days later. These will be key matches to add points and, little by little, get closer to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup that will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
