MLB Minor League Baseball witnessed one of the most curious moments of the 2024 season on Thursday when a dog named Bruce became the official Bat-Dog of the New York Rochester Red Wings team in Double-A, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles of the Major Leagues.
As seen on the Minor Leagues’ X (formerly Twitter) account, Bruce, a Golden Retriever, captured the public’s attention when he made his debut in the first inning to pick up the implement of one of his teammates.
The mascot also made fans laugh a lot because when he tried to carry the bat, due to its weight, it constantly went from side to side, but he kept trying until he achieved his goal of taking it to the Red Wings dugout.
In addition, the team’s own players and staff were constantly watching Bruce to prevent him from being hit by a batted ball or a ball thrown from the infield.
Bruce’s debut comes after several months where the team’s own fans had seen him constantly training to achieve his goal.
“I think it just adds to the fun of the game,” commented a fan named Keith Freedman. “People get really excited. It gets the kids excited and just makes the game more fun. Go Bruce!”.
Additionally, the day was special because it marked the announcement that three players would become part of the Red Wings Hall of Fame, as well as the presentation of a jersey that will be worn on September 20 to commemorate Deaf Culture Night.
