A Long Island man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing a man in the neck in front of his three children, authorities said.

Identified as Jorge Guevara, 49, he was sentenced in June on first-degree assault and related charges for stabbing his girlfriend in a domestic dispute on March 28, 2023, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said in a statement.

The victim had returned home from work when she and the defendant began fighting, officials said. Guevara then threatened her with a knife.

As the two struggled over the knife, Guevara grabbed a pair of scissors from a desk and stabbed his then-girlfriend “in the neck and shoulder repeatedly,” according to the district attorney’s office.

Three “underage children” witnessed the attack, Tierney said, but he did not elaborate on the children’s ages or how they were related to the victim or Guevara.

After the bloody incident, Guevara denied the victim or the children the right to call 911, according to officials.

A neighbor who heard the unidentified woman screaming for help went to the residence, but the perpetrator would not let him call authorities. When the neighbor tried to leave, he was unable to open the door and had to jump out of a window.

Only then was the resident able to call the police.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a “deep laceration to his neck,” officers said.

A Suffolk County jury found the Hispanic man guilty of all charges on June 19 of this year. On Wednesday, Steven Pilwski, acting Supreme Court judge, sentenced him to 15 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

“This case represents a horrific act of domestic violence that will leave lasting scars on all involved,” Tierney said in a statement Thursday.

“We cannot begin to comprehend the terror those children experienced, or the betrayal and pain the victim suffered at the hands of someone who should have been her protector,” she added. “We hope this outcome helps the family as they begin their journey of healing and recovery.”
