A teenager at Joppatowne High School in Joppa died after being shot while in the bathroom, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office said. The suspect, another student at the same school, tried to escape after shooting his classmate, but was captured by authorities.

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler reported on the accident that occurred at the high school during a conference, as well as a statement.

“Harford County Sheriff’s Office South District deputies were dispatched to Joppatowne High School to search for an active shooter. A Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer assigned to the school was on scene and responded immediately to identify and address the threat,” said Sheriff Gahler.

Teachers provided help to the student

Officers and other agencies arrived at the school and went in teams to search for the attacker. Minutes earlier, students and teachers brought a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the entrance of the building so he could receive medical attention.

“County medics took over medical care and transferred the student to Maryland State Police medics, who transported him by helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital,” he said.

The student, who was identified as Warren Curtis Grant of Edgewood, died from his injuries after arriving at the hospital. Sheriff Gahler said the victim and suspect knew each other.

The suspect was arrested

At the school, multiple agencies searched every corner for additional victims and evacuated the entire campus. Other officers began searching the area around the high school for the suspect.

“Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division launched an investigation, using technology to identify a person as the aggressor,” they confirmed.

The sheriff said that shortly afterward, citizens contacted the Emergency Operations Center to report that a suspicious young man was trying to enter a home. Deputies who were in the area responded immediately and arrested the individual.

He was charged with several counts as an adult

The juvenile was identified by authorities as Jaylen Rushawn Prince, 16, of Edgewood. He is a student at Joppatowne High School. “The arrest was conducted without incident.”

“Mr. Prince has been charged as an adult with murder, first- and second-degree assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or crime of violence,” the sheriff shared.

Jaylen Prince is currently being held at the Harford County Detention Center, where he is said to be awaiting his initial appearance before a court officer.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Detective Ross of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 443-409-3555.
