A Chinese-Latino man revealed the big secret to preparing loose rice, something that many people try to achieve. In a video that went viral on TikTok, with almost 7 million likes and more than 81,000 comments, he shows the correct way to cook this popular food.

Erik and Andrea Hung (@chinoylatina), a couple with Venezuelan roots, often record everyday videos for social media. For him, it is a waste of time for people to use the old technique of two cups of water for every cup of rice.

“You do it in a strange way,” he comments to his wife.

How to make perfect rice?

Imagining rice to be perfect can be harder than making it. Erik explained that people must first wash the rice until it is completely clean.

How do you know if rice is completely clean? When the water no longer has any starch residue, that is, when it no longer has a whitish color.

“One important thing: if you are in Venezuela, do not use tap water, use filtered (potable) water. Here in the United States, you can drink from the tap, but I don’t drink from the tap,” he recommends.

The content creator then reveals a big secret for making loose rice: the correct amount of water to add to the bag, with the rice already in the pot, by placing the index finger. The water should reach the first line of the finger or even a little before.

“As a rule, it is always in the first row. You don’t dip your finger in and touch the bottom of the pot, but as soon as you feel the rice, you add water up to the first row of your finger. Since I like it al dente, I add a little less,” he explains.

Erik insists that the size of the pot does not matter, the measurement will always be up to the first line of the index finger.

He adds that the pot should be placed with its lid on high heat. When many bubbles begin to appear, the burner should be turned off. “It should always be left covered, it should be cooked covered, it should be left covered,” he recommends. “Once it is turned off, there is no more water and the rice is ready.”
