Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia left his country on Saturday in the face of threats of arrest by the Nicolás Maduro regime. Chavista vice president Delcy Rodríguez said he was granted safe conduct after spending “several days” in the Spanish Embassy in Caracas.

“Today, opposition citizen Edmundo González Urrutia left the country. Having voluntarily sought refuge in the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas for several days, he requested political asylum from that government,” the official reported on Instagram.

Rodríguez explained that the Venezuelan regime and the Spanish government maintained the corresponding contacts and the opposition leader was granted safe conduct to leave the diplomatic headquarters and travel to the European country.

“This conduct reaffirms the respect for the law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community,” said Rodriguez.

He also assured that more information on the matter would be provided in the coming hours.

Recently, Nicolás Maduro assured that the opposition leader was “hiding” in a house in an affluent area of Caracas, and was preparing to leave the country for Miami.

As of the publication of this note, the Democratic Unitary Platform has not commented on the departure of its standard-bearer from the country, nor has its leader María Corina Machado.

After the elections of July 28, in which the electoral body declared Maduro a supposed victory, a political crisis broke out. The opposition published more than 80% of the minutes that would show that Edmundo González Urrutia won.

Spain confirmed that it granted asylum to Edmundo González

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed that his country will grant political asylum to Edmundo González Urrutia.

In statements to the press, quoted by the Efe news agency, he said that a Spanish Air Force plane had flown the presidential candidate from Venezuela.

“I conveyed to him our joy that he is well, that he is on his way to Spain, and I reiterated the government’s commitment to political rights, freedom of expression and demonstration, and the physical integrity of all Venezuelans,” he said.

Albares also confirmed that González Urrutia spent some time in the residence of the Spanish Embassy in Caracas, but did not give further details on this.

The foreign minister of Pedro Sánchez’s government also insisted that the electoral authorities of Venezuela must show the minutes that prove Maduro’s supposed victory because, otherwise, they will not recognize the official results.

Edmundo González, at his own request, flies to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane.

The Government of Spain is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans.
