The Spanish Air Force plane carrying Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González landed at Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid) around 10:00 am Eastern Time.

González, accompanied by his wife and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío, was received by Susana Sumelzo, Secretary of State for Ibero-America and Spanish in the World.

Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said that the process for González’s asylum application will begin, with a favorable resolution expected in line with Spain’s commitment to the political rights and physical integrity of Venezuelans, especially political leaders.

Maria Corina Machado spoke out on the arrival of Gonzalez to Spain

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado spoke out minutes earlier about the critical situation facing Edmundo González. Through her account on the social network X, Machado expressed her concern for the safety of González, who has been the target of increasing threats, court summons, arrest warrants and blackmail attempts.

Machado, founder of the Vente Venezuela party, stressed the seriousness of the situation and stated that it is imperative to protect González’s freedom, integrity and life: “In the face of this brutal reality, it is necessary for our cause to preserve his freedom, his integrity and his life,” she said.

Machado also denounced that these actions are further proof of the criminal nature of the Venezuelan regime, which is becoming increasingly delegitimized every day.

“This operation is further evidence of their criminal nature, which delegitimizes and sinks them more and more every day. But, once again, they were wrong. Their attempted coup against Popular Sovereignty will not come to fruition,” he declared.
