Cottonwood emergency services were called to the scene after receiving an emergency call about a small plane that had crashed on the roof of a garage in the residential area of Spur Drive on Sunday, September 8, the Verde Valley Fire District reported.

Verde Valley Fire Department officials said the pilot of the Mooney M20F single-engine plane crash-landed around 9 a.m. local time Sunday in Yavapai County, Arizona.

“Verde Valley and Cottonwood Fire Department firefighters extricated the pilot, who was treated and airlifted to the hospital with multiple injuries,” they shared.

No one was injured inside the house.

Sheriff’s officials said no one in or around the home where the crash occurred was injured. They also noted that the garage where the plane crashed is separate from the home.

They confirmed that the damage was only material, both to the garage and the plane. In an update they said that the pilot was already in stable condition and was traveling alone.

“The pilot was taken to a Phoenix-area hospital and is in stable condition. No one else was on board the plane and no one on the ground was injured,” the sheriff’s office added.

Emergency crews were moving the plane from the scene and asked the population to avoid the area while they carried out clean-up work.

The accident is under investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be conducting the investigation and will provide more information when it is obtained.

Residents on Spur Drive in Cottonwood woke up to the loud bang after the plane crashed, Fox 10 News reported.

Residents scared by the accident

“I was sleeping and I heard a bang,” Brandi Boykin told newscaster Brandi Boykin. “I thought it was my air conditioner falling through the roof and I didn’t think anything of it once I knew it wasn’t that. I was like, ‘Oh, something just crashed in the backyard, what’s going on?’”

The homes are located a couple of miles from Cottonwood Airport, but neighbors say they never imagined one of those planes would crash on their streets.

“I was very surprised, very shocked,” Boykin told Fox 10.

Cottonwood in Yavapai County is located almost a 2-hour drive from Phoenix, Arizona’s capital.
