Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said Saturday that the 3-0 victory over New Zealand in Pasadena was not the result of a “great match.”

Although the team obtained a favourable result, Aguirre said: “Without playing a great match, the team continued to run, to put in effort, with great disposition and attitude. I didn’t like that at times we played backwards, we could have been more aggressive and defensively we arrived late.”

Aguirre also said that, in attack, they failed to take advantage of opportunities more. “In the final third we should have been more selfish. The ball can’t hit the post. I told my players that if they score three, they should score six. We mustn’t be satisfied,” emphasized the coach, who began his third stint in charge of the Mexican national team.

The coach pointed out that the limitations to display a better game were due, in part, to the lack of training. “Playing well was difficult not only because of the lack of training, but because of the heat that was felt today. The collective performance was intermittent, there were good things, but the light went out when we were in the rival area. We must always play forward,” explained Aguirre.

The Mexican national team will have its next friendly match against Canada on Tuesday, and Aguirre announced that there will be changes in the lineup.

In addition to the absence of César Montes, who has been given permission to complete his transfer to Russian football, Aguirre said that Luis Chávez is in doubt due to an injury. “Víctor Guzmán will play for César against Canada. In addition to Víctor, I will change the goalkeeper. I am not going to expose Chávez, if he does not recover, we will put another one in,” he said, also praising the atmosphere in the team: “Of the 26 players I called up, I have been surprised by their camaraderie, there is a fantastic human group.”
