The New York Yankees have launched their own range of apparel in collaboration with Italian giants AC Milan, following in the footsteps of several teams with other brands.

Such is the case of Paris Saint-Germain partnering with Jordan, while Adidas teamed up with Pharrell Williams in 2020-21 to create custom shirts for Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Juventus also collaborated with Adidas and skate brand Palace in 2019, and Ajax even drew inspiration from Bob Marley for their 2021-22 third kit.

But if you’re imagining Zlatan Ibrahimovic dressed in one of those classic baggy pinstripe uniforms once worn by Babe Ruth, or a glowing sepia-tinted Gerrit Cole in a red and black uniform resembling a young Franco Baresi, then think again.

The collection is said to be “inspired by the cultural impact of Milan and New York and combines the elegance of Milanese design with the street spirit of New York.” So it’s more the kind of piece you’d see Christian Pulisic or Ruben Loftus-Cheek sporting when they’re out to dinner in the Brera neighborhood, or Aaron Judge and Juan Soto grabbing a bite to eat on the Upper West Side.

The design features the Yankees logo intertwined with that of Milan – the first time New York’s iconic emblem has been merged into a new badge with another sporting organisation – in the year the Serie A giants celebrate their 125th anniversary.

The collection includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, cardigans, baseball caps, baseballs, playing cards and a notebook. All feature the famous crests of the seven-time European champions and 27-time World Series winners in various configurations and combinations.

Milan already has other collaborations under its belt: its range with Italian jewellers Nove25, the swimwear line with MC2 Saint Bath, a clothing line with Rafael Leão himself and its fourth kit in collaboration with Paris-based Koché.

“This entire collaboration is a tribute to the momentous impact that the cities of Milan and New York have on fashion and culture around the world, and we can’t wait to see that cross-cultural spirit reflected as people enjoy the collection,” said AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani.

Yankees President Randy Levine added: “Coming together for this project made sense on many levels, especially considering how our brands resonate with sports and fashion fans.

“We are also thrilled to deepen the ties between our teams and congratulate those who contributed design input to create a collection that has style and substance,” Levine concluded.
