An apple juice sold in supermarkets such as Walmart and Aldi is being pulled from shelves due to the presence of dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic, which can cause serious health problems.

Affected brands and extension of the recall

According to CBS News, the problem began with a recall of nearly 10,000 cases of Walmart’s Great Value juice, distributed in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Now, the recall includes 133,500 cases of various brands, manufactured by Refresco Beverages in Florida.

Affected brands include:

  • Great Value (Walmart)
  • Nature’s Nectar 100% Apple Juice (Aldi)
  • Products from BJs, Market Basket, Walgreens and Weis Markets

At Walmart, the recalled juice was sold in six-packs of plastic bottles in more than 2,000 stores. Aldi has also recalled its Nature’s Nectar juice in 16 states, including Alabama, Florida, Illinois and New York.

What to do if you bought these products

Aldi issued a statement urging customers to throw away the product or return it to the store for a full refund.

Associated health risks

Inorganic arsenic is toxic and has been classified as a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. Although it is found in many foods in small amounts, the levels detected in these juices were high enough to cause concern.

However, according to the FDA, the levels found would not be high enough to cause serious health problems.
