The campaign of Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, announced this Saturday that it will focus on mobilizing Latino voters during Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins this Sunday.
The campaign will be present at sporting events such as boxing and baseball, and will also make a historic investment of $3 million in advertising in Spanish-language media, especially on radio, the campaign said in a statement.
Hispanic Heritage Month, which recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanics in U.S. history and culture, is celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15. This year, it takes on special significance due to the proximity of the November 5 election.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is an important time to celebrate the richness and diversity of Latino communities across the country,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.
“This occasion also represents a crucial moment for us to continue connecting with Latino voters about what is at stake in this election, the importance of their vote, and the need to defeat Trump and his anti-Latino agenda,” said Chavez Rodriguez, granddaughter of legendary Latino activist Cesar Chavez.
Harris’ own campaign manager is scheduled to attend tonight’s boxing match in Las Vegas, Nevada, between Mexican world champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Edgar Berlanga, born in New York and of Puerto Rican descent.
At the event, accompanied by Congressman Adriano Espaillat and Senator Ben Ray Luján, Chavez Rodríguez will have the opportunity to engage with voters while attending the contest, wearing apparel from the campaign of Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.
To strengthen the campaign’s presence, trucks will circulate around Las Vegas displaying a television ad called “Luchadora” (Fighter) that highlights Harris’ work to improve the situation at the border and the work she did as a prosecutor to fight cartels, human traffickers and international gangs.
Campaign members will also attend celebrations of Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16, when Mexican communities in the United States organize parades in places like Phoenix, Arizona, and Raleigh, North Carolina, where this year there will be Harris supporters.
Additionally, the group “Latinos con Harris-Walz” will organize events in the key state of Michigan, with the participation of Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García, born in Durango, Mexico.
Among the events in Michigan is a gathering with tamales, sweet bread and drinks that will take place before a party for the Detroit Tigers baseball team to honor the contributions of Hispanics to the sport.
Most of the events will be concentrated in the seven key states for the elections: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada and Arizona, the latter two being where the Latino population has a greater weight, representing 20% and 25% of the electorate, respectively.
The campaign will also invest an additional $3 million in Spanish-language media, especially radio, to strengthen its outreach efforts among Latino voters.
Radio is a highly consumed medium by Latino voters, as 96% of them listen to the radio weekly, a figure much higher than that of the general population in the United States.
