Following Gregg Berhalter’s failure at the 2024 Copa América with the United States national team, the board decided to remove him from his position and bet on another project, which is why they recently announced Argentine Mauricio Pochettino to take charge of the USMNT.
This move by the young coach generated mixed opinions from several colleagues about abandoning club football and experimenting at the national team level. However, recently the experienced Spanish coach Pep Guardiola took the opportunity to wish the Argentine good luck and talk about the American project.
“I wish him and the United States the best of luck, I have great friends there. I know Mauricio is a top-class coach with a lot of experience and I know he will do as well as possible,” Guardiola said in a press conference ahead of the match against Brentford.
Guardiola also took the opportunity to praise the United States team’s project, which will also host the next World Cup and hopes to win the tournament at home under Pochettino’s guidance.
“The United States has everything to build a great project for many years and seek to take its national team to the next level. The potential that the United States has stands out for its quality and if Mauricio has opted for it it is because it is undoubtedly a great opportunity for him,” added the Spanish coach of Manchester City.
Pochettino joins the USMNT on a multimillion-dollar contract worth $6 million per year and will be in charge of the Stars and Stripes team until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
This is the first experience in the national team for the young Argentine coach, who has managed great teams in Europe such as Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea.
