Saúl Canelo Álvarez knew he was the favorite and he proved it at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Mexican boxer won by unanimous decision 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109 against his challenger Édgar Berlanga in 12 rounds. After the fight, the wave of memes on social media was not long in coming.
The memes highlighted the most iconic moments of the fight. Like in the third round, when a left hook from the Guadalajara native made Berlanga and the entire stadium tremble.
The Puerto Rican fell to the canvas and everyone thought that would be the end. However, he got up and continued fighting. There was also controversy in the fifth round and the memes about it were lacking.
Both fighters got into an argument over an alleged low-guard punch. The referee even went viral for falling down when trying to separate them.
In the seventh round, Canelo continued to dominate the fight and Berlanga fell to the canvas for the second time. This time, however, it was due to a slip. The memes did not forgive this incident either.
The fight ended with a victory for the Guadalajara native by unanimous decision after 12 rounds of combat. Canelo dominated at will, but was unable to knock out.
