Dion Kimbrough, 24, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in a highway shooting that resulted in the death of Eli Hickerson, a 30-year-old man from Carthage, Indiana.
The sentence was handed down by a Marion County judge on Friday after he was found guilty of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The tragic incident took place on July 18, 2022, when Hickerson was a passenger in a car. Kimbrough, who was driving a semi-truck, fired at the vehicle Hickerson was in as the two were traveling on Interstate 70 on the east end of Indianapolis, according to prosecutors.
“Mr. Hickerson tragically lost his life due to an unacceptable act of road rage while on his way home from work,” Marion County District Attorney Ryan Mears said in a statement.
Kimbrogh’s defense attorney, Israel Nunez Cruz, said his client acted in self-defense and has announced his intention to appeal the conviction.
The driver of the car Hickerson was riding in told investigators that a semi-truck was observed driving erratically on Interstate 465 before it began following his vehicle as it exited onto Interstate 70.
The truck came dangerously close to his car and the truck driver opened fire repeatedly, he said.
