Venezuela’s allegations that the United States is involved in a plot to destabilize the government and carry out an attack against President Nicolas Maduro are “categorically false,” a State Department spokesman said.

The spokesman confirmed that one US soldier had been arrested and pointed to “unconfirmed reports of two other US citizens detained in Venezuela,” after Caracas reported that three Americans, two Spaniards and a Czech, had been arrested in connection with the case.

“We can confirm the detention of one member of the U.S. military and are aware of unconfirmed reports of two additional U.S. citizens detained in Venezuela,” the spokesman said.

Claim of US involvement is false

The United States reiterated that any claim of US involvement in a plot to overthrow Maduro is “categorically false.”

“The United States continues to support a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela,” the spokesperson concluded.

Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced the arrest of two Spanish citizens, three Americans and a Czech citizen involved in an alleged operation aimed at carrying out “terrorist” acts, including assassinating President Maduro.

Investigating the arrest

The US Navy is investigating the detention of a marine in Venezuela who was on a personal trip, Pentagon sources told EFE on Wednesday.

“We are aware of reports that a U.S. Navy Marine was detained on or about August 30, 2024 by Venezuelan law enforcement authorities while on personal travel to Venezuela,” Pentagon sources said.
