Goalkeeper and historic player of the Mexican national team, Guillermo Ochoa, made a successful debut in his new professional stage with AVS Futebol of the Portuguese League, which is why he said that this gives him the motivation to want to stay in professional sport for much longer.
The player made these statements after his team’s 1-0 victory over Rio Ave, a match in which he established himself as a key player for his new team by making three key catches that kept the goal at zero in order to secure the victory.
“A new championship for me, a new challenge, getting to know a country that is growing a lot in terms of football, that has many great players of international quality,” said the 39-year-old goalkeeper, who hopes to recover his sporting level in order to be called up again for the Mexican national team in the process for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
“I still have the energy to keep playing, to keep believing that I can give a little more to football,” added Memo Ochoa as a message to all those people who have criticized him for wanting to continue playing professionally despite his age.
Ochoa has highlighted his desire to turn around the bad moment he experienced with Salernitana in Italy and for that reason he took on the objective of helping AVS become a competitive team in Portugal in order to attract the attention of the new technical director of El Tri, Javier Aguirre, who is already thinking about changing the Aztec goalkeeper.
In the last call-up of the Mexican national team against the national teams of New Zealand and Canada, the goalkeepers called up for these matches were Luis Malagón, Raúl ‘Tala’ Rangel and Alex Padilla.
