In Spain, tolerance for racism seems to be diminishing and severe sanctions are beginning to be imposed. Last season, we saw three Valencia fans sentenced to eight months in prison for racist insults towards Vinícius Jr. at the Mestalla stadium during a match.

Recently, the Permanent Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport has once again proposed a harsh sanction against a fan. This time for repeatedly insulting Real Madrid player Vinícius Jr. with racist insults via social network X (formerly Twitter).

The Commission alleges that the fan has “repeatedly disseminated numerous racist insults and images of the same nature against the player Vinícius”, filing a lawsuit with the Prosecutor’s Office and requesting a fine of $66,000 dollars from the fan for these racist acts through social networks.

But the sanction requested by the Commission is not only financial. The request submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office also indicates the prohibition of the fan from attending any sporting event for a period of two years.

They also claim that the accused already has a criminal record for this type of racist insults. “It also notes that this individual has three sanctions for similar acts in the previous season,” the Commission states.

Vinícius has been the face of the fight against racism in recent years in Spain. The Brazilian star has even made it clear that this season he will not tolerate insults from fans and will directly leave the pitch if he hears such insults from the stands.

Furthermore, this request comes shortly after Vinícius’ controversial statements to CNN. In which he asserts that if Spain continues to have these problems of racism, it should be removed as the venue for the next 2030 World Cup.
