Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón will be awarded the so-called Abrazo de Honor (Honor Embrace) during the upcoming Biarritz Film Festival in France for his contribution to Latin American culture.
According to the general delegate of Biarritz, the 62-year-old artist was awarded this recognition because, through his work of more than 30 years in Latin cinema, he has managed to elevate the art from this region of the world.
Today, each new project of Alfonso offers a new challenge, a new dimension and confirms his unrivalled talent.”
Alfonso Cuarón returns to the festival that opened its doors to him
This is not the first time that the screenwriter has visited the festival in the city in the southwest of France. In the early 1990s, Cuarón attended the European competition to present his first film, “Solo con tu Pareja.”
Since its inception, the Biarritz Amérique Latine Festival has become one of the most important film events for Latin cinema in Europe. This year’s edition will take place from September 21 to September 27.
Alfonso Cuarón triumphs in Venice
Prior to his recent announcement at the European competition, the two-time Oscar winner for Best Director for “Roma” and “Gravity” was present at the last Venice Film Festival to present his most recent work: the Apple TV series “Disclaimer.”
Outside of competition, the Latin filmmaker shared the first four chapters of his first television series, which was applauded by those attending the Gran Sala del Lido. However, despite its premiere at an event of this magnitude, the specialized critics decided not to express their opinion until the premiere of the complete series.
“Disclaimer” tells the story of journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, played by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who becomes the protagonist of a novel that could have a profound impact on her life.
The rest of the cast includes other big names in the international film industry such as Sasha Baron Cohen, Kevin Kline, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge, Kodi Smith-McPhee, among others.
The eight-episode series will be released on Apple’s streaming platform starting October 11 of this year.
