Mexican Carlos Vela was officially presented as a new player for Los Angeles FC on Wednesday, and expressed his desire that his friend, French forward Antoine Griezmann, currently at Atletico Madrid, join the MLS team in the future. Vela stressed that Griezmann has a particular interest in life in the United States.
“Whether I play with him or not, we will always have a good relationship, that is the good thing about football,” Vela said, referring to the close friendship he has with Griezmann, in statements collected by EFE. He also expressed optimism about the possibility of his friend joining the American league: “I hope that one day he comes here, that he can be part of this league, this club.”
Carlos Vela, who left the club last December to take a few months away from football, also commented that the American lifestyle appeals to the French player. “He really likes this lifestyle, he really likes American sports,” added Vela, underlining Griezmann’s affinity with American sports culture.
As for his own return, Vela has signed a contract that ties him to LAFC for the remainder of the 2024 season, with the option of an extension by the club through 2025.
Carlos Vela is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in MLS history and, in particular, LAFC’s standout performer. He is currently the team’s undisputed leader in several aspects, including games played (152), minutes played (11,194), goals (78) and assists (59). These achievements have cemented his place as a benchmark within the team and the league.
